Types of Wood Flooring

Advances in wood flooring during the past few years mean that you now can have wood flooring anywhere in your home or business. However where you want to put it will determine that types of wood flooring are available for you.

Unfinished and Factory Finished Wood Flooring

You can buy unfinished wood flooring, and your installer will sand the wood and apply the finish on the job site. All wood flooring will need a finish though, to protect from everyday use. There are many different types of finishes including oil based, and water based.

You can also get factory finished wood flooring. This option is finished by the manufacturer and has become as widely available as unfinished wood flooring. These floors require less time to install because the sanding and finishing process has already happened and are ready to walk on the moment they are installed.

Solid and Engineered Wood Flooring

Solid wood is exactly as the name suggests, a solid piece of wood top to bottom. The thickness varies but generally ranges from ¾” to 5/16″. One great benefit of solid wood is that it can be refinished and sanded many times.

Engineered wood flooring is a thin layer of wood on top of a other types of wood with other layers added into it as well. The grain of each layer runs in different directions, which makes it very stable and keeps it from contracting/expanding. The top layer of engineered wood flooring consists of high-quality wood. Engineered wood can be sanded and refinished but not nearly as many times as solid wood.
